As Beachgoers Ran From Danger, Viral Photo Shows Rescuer Running ‘Pedal to the Metal’ In the Direction of the Scene.
Alexandra Ching, a lifelong local of Bondi, has always considered the famous beach as her personal space. On a recent Sunday evening, she, along with numerous neighbors, heard pops reverberating across the suburb.
“We all thought the same, but I reasoned it was still too bright and you couldn't spot any lights,” she explains. She left her home, she observed people “flooding up Bondi Road”. The faces she saw told her a crisis was unfolding.
As she stood on the road, speaking to a pair who had run up the hill still dripping wet, she noticed someone moving up behind her. It was a beach patrol officer, dashing towards Bondi unshod from the nearby Tamarama beach – roughly 1.5km – while transporting a medical device.
“I heard someone say ‘excuse me’, and when I spun around I spotted this streak in blue,” Ching describes. “He was just flying past. It was just him running in the opposite way that everyone was trying to flee, and hauling that big kit and unshod … He was sprinting into something that undoubtedly every part of you would signal you to run in the other direction.
“Without a second thought, but just totally pedal to the metal running.”
A Powerful Moment of Heroism Amidst Crisis
The photo taken by Ching of the lifeguard, now known to be Jackson Doolan, rapidly circulated as a prime example of acts of valour in the aftermath of the terror attack.
Andy Reid, another lifeguard, says that Doolan, referred to as “Jacko”, hurried from Tamarama beach to assist the other members at Bondi, as well as to help other rescuers, officers and paramedics attending to numerous victims.

Waverley council, the governing body that oversees many professional beach safety officers, stated that the staff rose to the occasion from the instant the shooting started right into late that night.
