British Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have operated alongside French warplanes in a joint strike against an subterranean weapons facility in Syrian territory employed by the IS group, per a report from the UK Ministry of Defence.

The facility, identified by intelligence, was assessed as storing arms and explosives, the release indicated, and was positioned in hills just north of the historic site of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"Our fighter planes employed laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to hit a series of entry passages down to the depot... preliminary assessments suggest the strike was effective," the MoD said.

There was no indication of any harm to civilians in the attack conducted Saturday night and every plane involved made a safe return, the ministry further stated.

The British jets were supported by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

IS - alternatively referred to as Daesh - established extremist governance over parts of Syria and Iraq until 2019.

"This operation demonstrates the UK's leading role, and determination to operate in unison with our allies, to eradicate any re-emergence of IS and their violent and radical beliefs in the area," Britain's Defence Chief John Healey said.

RAF aircraft have carried out overwatch operations over Syria to "prevent any attempted resurgence" of IS after its routing at the Baghuz confrontation in 2019, the MoD reported.

"I want to thank every member of our armed forces who took part in this mission for their expertise and their courage," he commented. "They were part of a great many British troops on duty over the festive period. This operation, to take out terrorist threats who threaten our way of life, shows how British military are always on standby, continuously, protecting the UK domestically and powerful internationally."

In December, the American forces executed what it described as a "major assault" targeting Daesh sites in the country, subsequent to an ambush claimed the lives of two American soldiers and a civilian linguist in the Palmyra area.

The United Nations says Islamic State still maintains between 5,000 and 7,000 fighters in both countries.
