Israelis mark second anniversary of 7 October incident as Palestinian ceasefire negotiations continue
People have come together across the country to remember two years since the Hamas-conducted assault on 7 October 2023, as talks continued in the neighboring country over a resolution to the conflict in Gaza.
The incident resulted in more than 1,200 people killed and 251 others abducted back to Gaza as prisoners. It was the uniquely most lethal day for Jewish people since the Second World War.
Israel reacted by beginning a military offensive in Gaza which has taken more than 67,000 people, according to the region's Hamas-run health ministry. Its numbers are seen as accurate by the United Nations and other international bodies.
"Our bloodthirsty opponents have caused great damage, but they have not defeated us," the prime minister stated on that day.
He also pledged to "realize all the aims of the war: the homecoming of all the abducted, the destruction of the Hamas administration and the guarantee that Gaza will no longer present a threat to Israel".
Commemorative Gatherings Across Israel
The government authorities delayed state commemorations until mid-October - after the end of the Jewish High Holiday season - but gatherings still were held around the country on Tuesday.
A commemorative event for the loved ones of Israelis killed in the Hamas attack was conducted in the coastal city. Arranged by the families themselves, it was broadcast throughout Israeli TV networks.
Some time earlier, a moment of silence was observed across the country.
Negotiation Talks in Egypt
Simultaneously, the conflicting parties' negotiating teams convened in the Egyptian coastal city of Sharm el-Sheikh for a follow-up session of indirect talks to discuss the conditions of the proposal.
A prominent Palestinian official involved in the talks indicated that an evening round of indirect talks began at evening in Egypt.
The source stated the earlier meeting concluded without concrete outcomes, due to differences over the proposed Israeli withdrawal maps from Gaza and over assurances Hamas demands to ensure Israel does not restart combat after the first phase of the arrangement.
He commented that the discussions are "challenging and have still not produce any real breakthrough," but mentioned that facilitators are making efforts to narrow the gaps between the both parties.
Essential Points in Negotiations
- A lasting truce
- The exchange of the hostages still held by Hamas for Palestinian prisoners from Gaza
- The pullout of Israeli forces from Gaza
- Arrangements for relief supplies deliveries
- After-conflict management of the region
Citizen Sentiment
In the city's Hostages Square that day, young a woman - whose family member lived through the attack on the Nova music festival, where hundreds were lost their lives and numerous more were captured by Hamas gunmen - told: "No place seems like home any longer and until each abducted person come back none of us will have peace of mind."
"Once we see all home once more, we can feel relief again. Then we can start to recover," she added.
In front of the leader's home in Jerusalem, people gathered to show their backing for the families of the hostages. Israel says forty-eight remain in confinement in Gaza, approximately twenty of whom are believed to be surviving.
Protester a participant explained: "It's necessary do every compromise necessary for the abducted to come back home. But we really want assurances that we will be safe."
Surveys now consistently show that about 70% of Israelis desire the conflict to finish in return for the release of the hostages.
Gaza Conditions
At the location of Nova festival, mourners came together to honor the dead.
From the site, the boom of Israeli air strikes and shelling could be heard just a short distance away in Gaza, where observers reported the severe Israeli bombardment continued.
In the urban center, bombardments were reported in the early hours of that day in the western Tal al-Hawa, sector and Nasr neighbourhoods and in the eastern district of Sheikh Radwan, as well the settlement to the north-west.
"As the dusk falls, the dread appears with it," evacuated urban resident a mother, whose 17-year-old son was lost his life by an Israeli air strike earlier, shared.
"Me and my three children are fearful of the bombings. Throughout the evening we are lying together, holding each other, notably my smallest child who puts his head on me the entire evening."
"Constantly we check the updates to see what happened. And I'm concerned that this ceasefire will not be completed and that the war will come back to us."
Health Situation
The medical facility in Gaza City reported it had accepted the bodies of six people by the midday, including a trio who lost their lives in an Israeli attack in the south part area.
A different healthcare center in the southern urban center of the city indicated two more fatalities had been brought there. One of them was lost his life by Israeli forces while attempting to get aid to the south region, health workers said.
