Meteorological devices containing thousands of packs of cigarettes have interfered with air travel in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was compelled to shut down for hours when dozens of them entered the country's airspace.
Aviation Problems
The airport closure led to thirty canceled flights impacting 6,000 passengers, with authorities cautioning that delays might continue throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Authorities reported that 25 meteorological balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with two of which ending up precisely above the aviation facility.
As many as 14 of the meteorological devices sent during the weekend drifted across the Vilnius area, which is situated near Lithuania's primary metropolis and adjacent to the frontier with Belarus.
Contraband Recovery
At least 11 balloons transporting eighteen thousand packages of illegal tobacco products have been collected so far, though more recoveries are anticipated, according to border security officials.
International Illegal Trade
Despite the disruption, authorities noted that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - Belarusian smoking products - are nothing new in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
Since January, 544 balloons have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been noted during the prior year.
Neighboring Country Impact
Meanwhile, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has recorded more than one hundred incidents in which smuggled items were delivered from its neighbor using the meteorological equipment.
Criminal Methodology
In response to questions about why criminal organizations employ a technique that proves highly susceptible to weather elements rather than simpler to operate drones, representatives elaborated that "Atmospheric equipment are rudimentary tools used by smugglers - they are cheaper than drones for moving tobacco products from Belarus."
Law Enforcement Objectives
Officials added that "The objective of our agencies is to confiscate the maximum possible volumes of smuggled items and to arrest masterminds and perpetrators so that these practices become unprofitable and present no risk to civil aviation."
European Tensions
The recent incidents occur during a period of increased concerns in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have created aviation problems across the region.
Parallel situations in nearby states have led European authorities to speed up talks about improving airspace protection throughout the region.
