Currently exist "no preparations" for US President Donald Trump to confer with Russia's Vladimir Putin "in the immediate future", a White House official has announced.

Last Thursday the US president indicated he and the Kremlin leader would conduct negotiations in Hungary's capital in the coming fortnight to address the Ukraine conflict.

A planning session between US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and his opposite number Foreign Minister Lavrov was due to be held recently - but the administration stated the two had had a "positive" conversation and that a face-to-face session was no longer "required".

The administration did not share additional specifics on the reason the negotiations had been put on hold.

Background Context

Trump had raised the possibility of a Hungarian meeting over the phone with Putin, a day before hosting Ukraine's President Zelensky in the White House.

Some reports suggested his meeting with Zelensky had been a "shouting match", with insiders indicating the president had pressured him to give up significant territories of eastern Ukraine as part of a deal with Moscow.

Nevertheless, on Monday Trump embraced a peace initiative endorsed by Kyiv and European leaders to freeze the war on the current front line.

"Let it be cut the way it is," he stated.

Russia has frequently resisted against pausing the present battle positions.

The Russian government was only interested in "enduring stability", Lavrov stated on this week, implying that freezing the front line would merely represent a temporary ceasefire.

Diplomatic Positions

The "fundamental issues" of the hostilities needed to be addressed, Lavrov said, using Russian diplomatic language for a series of comprehensive conditions that include the recognition of total Russian authority over the eastern region as well as the demilitarisation of the country – a unacceptable proposition for Ukraine and its Western allies.

Zelensky said discussions about the battle positions were the "start of negotiations" but that Russia was "employing all tactics" to evade negotiations.

He additionally stated the sole subject that could make Moscow "take notice" was that of the supply of extended-range arms to the Ukrainian military.

Military Considerations

The Russian president's unplanned conversation with the US leader recently occurred before rumors that the United States was considering delivering long-range Tomahawk missiles to Ukrainian forces that could potentially strike inside Russia.

The Ukrainian leader asserted it was the weapons consideration that had pressured the Kremlin to participate in talks. The conversation concerning the missiles had emerged as a "valuable contribution" in negotiations", he remarked.
