Prison Surprise: The FormerPresident Jair Bolsonaro Confronts Life Behind Bars
He fought justice and the law triumphed.
Two months subsequent to getting a 27-year sentence for trying to “eradicate” the nation's political system, former president Jair Bolsonaro now appears jail-bound.
Expected Jailing
The adjudicated plotter – who's been living under home confinement in his mansion while a set of judicial steps and appeals unfold – is largely predicted to be incarcerated in the next few days, amid increasing talk that he will be sent to a well-known top-security penitentiary.
Past Statements on Inmates
Throughout Bolsonaro’s 40-year public life, the right-wing former paratrooper showed scant compassion for the country's inmates.
“For what reason must we provide those lowlifes a good life?” he previously wondered. “They deserve to be fucked, full-fucking-stop. That’s what I reckon.”
At another time, Bolsonaro stated: “Should you not wish to end up behind bars, you simply need is to avoid rape, kidnap or theft.”
Prison Destination Debate
Yet the prospect of Bolsonaro himself winding up in the Papuda prison maximum security prison in Brasília has horrified allies, several of whom this week inspected the complex in an obvious effort to discourage the supreme court from sending him there.
Izalci Lucas, a senator from Bolsonaro’s allied group who was among that group, said he predicted the 70-year-old figure to be imprisoned in the coming fortnight and worried his location could be Papuda.
The senator argued Bolsonaro’s serious gut issues – the outcome of a near-fatal assault during the 2018 election race – meant it would be dangerous to keep the former president there. “His health is very grave. He will not be able to manage if they take him to Papuda … It could be terrible,” said the senator, who also worried about packed cells and the quality of prison meals.
When inspecting Papuda, Lucas remembered witnessing cells accommodating forty prisoners: “That is virtually one square metre per detainee.
“We spoke to the inmates and they protest, naturally, of the awful meals,” continued the senator.
Backers Speak Out
The senator isn't the sole person speaking out ahead of the ex-leader's expected incarceration.
Authoring in a major publication, one more backer, the ex- cabinet member Fábio Wajngarten, bemoaned the “brutal” finale to Bolsonaro’s “impeccable” time in office and alleged Brazil was about to witness “the largest unfairness in its record”.
“It is an unfairness that erodes the souls of countless of Brazilians,” the former minister said.
Divided General Response
It is possibly correct due to the substantial following Bolsonaro maintains on the conservative side. Yet his predicted imprisonment has also gladdened the spirits of many others who believe he ought to be jailed for plotting to block the elected leader from taking power – and additionally scheming to have him murdered.
Congressman Otoni, a representative for the incumbent leader's allied group, said: “Nobody wishes Bolsonaro to be placed in a dark cell. Nobody wishes Bolsonaro to be placed in solitary confinement. Not a soul desires Bolsonaro to lack food or for him to have to rest on hard ground. We want him to receive respectful handling – but dignified treatment in prison. He can’t carry on being his own prison warden for his entire life.”
Otoni was struck by how Bolsonaro backers, who have spent years celebrating the severe handling of convicts, had unexpectedly woken up to their privileges. “Recently has the conservative fringe – which has consistently asserted that human rights are not for criminals – decided to visit a penitentiary to learn what conditions are truly like,” he said.
“The former president is a criminal,” Otoni insisted, but that did not mean he deserved “degrading, insulting handling”.
Possible Jail Environment
In spite of speculation that Bolsonaro could be moved to Papuda, which now contains about thousands of inmates, his expected destination looks to be a nearby penitentiary for police officers and other “special” detainees known as Papudinha (Minor Papuda).
The accommodations are far more pleasant than those in the primary facility, although nonetheless a far cry from the luxury Bolsonaro had while residing in the spectacular official residence, approximately a short distance away.
As per information, the accommodation Bolsonaro could anticipate reside in in Papudinha measures about 260 square feet – approximately the dimensions of a couple of car spots – and contains a 12 square meter bathroom with a water facility and a 12 sq metre veranda. “Bolsonaro would be authorized to have a set and even a minibar in his room as long as they were donated by his family,” information stated.
Ideological Responses
