The British designer Antony Price, the groundbreaking style architect who crafted some of the most iconic looks worn by artists from David Bowie to Roxy Music and even royalty like Queen Camilla, has sadly died at 80 years old.

His reputation was built on his architectural shapes and performative fashion, such as the pastel suits that featured in the pop-rock group Duran Duran's classic music video for "the song Rio".

"In a tribute, they called him a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' the group posted a remembrance online."

Price's death comes shortly after he unveiled his most recent collection in London, which was his first major show in over 30 years. Artist Lily Allen walked in a dress inspired by the notorious black velvet "dress" once worn by Princess Diana.

A Pioneering Career

Born in Yorkshire in 1945, Price relocated to London in the early 1960s to attend the renowned Royal College of Art.

Upon completing his studies, he commenced his career designing men's fashion at Stirling Copper and was the creator of the tight, button-detailed trousers that Sir Mick Jagger famously wore during the iconic group's "Gimme Shelter" tour in 1969.

He launched his own brand in 1979 and presented his inaugural collection a year later. The show opened with creations worn by the famed model Jerry Hall, who later wore the marriage dress Price designed for her for her wedding to Sir Mick Jagger.

Working with Legends

A key creative partner of the late David Bowie, Price created the iconic jacket the singer wore for his "the song As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.

His signature ability to blend elements of men's and women's fashion along with his expert craftsmanship in shaping sculptural silhouettes made him a "one-of-a-kind talent," in the words of the British Fashion Council.

By the 1990s, he commenced designing ensembles for Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, including a number of outfits for her tour of the United States following her marriage.

Following a profession lasting half a century, Price staged what would be his last show in London last month in collaboration with the label 16Arlington.

  • Sculpted Silhouettes: Central to his design philosophy.
  • Theatrical Flair: Influencing music videos and stagewear.
  • Genre-Blending Design: Merging menswear with womenswear.
  • Clients from Stage to Palace: Spanning iconic musicians and members of the royal family.

Design circles says farewell to a authentic original whose legacy on style and culture remains deeply ingrained.
