Inside is a gasp-inducing chamber of vaulted ceilings and towering pillars, centered around a massive organ. Its elaborately decorated pews and misericords are worn smooth by time. The true gaze, though, is often captured by the mesmerizing stare of the hundreds of writhing gargoyles that seem to erupt from the outside stonework. They look less sculpted and more fossilised, like ancient guardians of this striking church.

Mysterious Beauty in an English Meadow

St Oswald's in Widford sits isolated in a meadow, accessible only by a rough track. Parking on a nearby verge, you make their way to a building that looks more like a farm building from a distance. The building is mostly from the 1200s, but inside, evidence of an earlier pre-Norman church become visible. Excavations have revealed ancient Roman tiles and fragments of medieval frescoes. All Saints Church in Tudeley, Kent, founded in the 12th century, is structurally rather simple. The church's true glory, however, lies in its stained glass. Every single one were designed by the celebrated painter Marc Chagall. The project began in 1963 with a commissioned piece dedicated to a family's daughter. The artist was so impressed by the site that he offered to create the other panes, a task completed in 1985. The windows feature a magnificent spectrum of blue hues.
